Russia: Klebnikov Verdict - Forbes Magazine

May 5, 2006 - Washington, DC. The acquittal today by a Russian jury of two of the persons charged with the July 2004 murder of American citizen Paul Klebnikov, the former editor of Forbes Russia magazine, unless overturned on appeal, means that those responsible for the murder remain at large. Accordingly, we urge Russian authorities to do everything possible to find and prosecute all those responsible for the murder - those who pulled the trigger and those who ordered the killing.

The U.S. Government remains ready to provide assistance to Russian authorities to realize this goal and recognizes the significant attention that the Russian Government at the highest levels has dedicated to this case. The intimidation and murder of journalists is an affront to all who value democratic values and must not be tolerated. Our thoughts go out to the Klebnikov family during this particularly difficult period.
